Survival Guide
Gateway is an experiment in
temporary community. For one weekend we will create a society where
community, participation, self-expression, and self-reliance are our
tenets and our lifeblood. Everyone is welcome at Gateway. However, this
is a NO SPECTATORS event. Gateway will be a highly entertaining
place and it can be far more than just a diversion. You will proportionately
gain what you put into your experience here, and then some. Play along.
Jump in with both feet. Participation is mandatory. There is as much
freedom and acceptance here as you require. We look forward to experiencing
what you have to offer. We hope you make the most of your experience
with us by helping to add to the experience of others. While you are
welcome to express yourself freely in our temporary autonomous zone,
we do have some rules. These rules exist solely for the overall safety
and comfort of the community. We use the Ten Principles to guide
us in hosting this event.

Ten Principles
Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of a Burn.
We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation
in our community.
Gifting
Burns are devoted to acts of
gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not
contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.
Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit
of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are
unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising.
We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist
the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.
Radical Self-reliance
Burns encourage the individual
to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.
Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises
from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual
or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as
a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights
and liberties of the recipient.
Communal Effort
Our community values creative
cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect
social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication
that support such interaction.
Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community
members who organize events should assume responsibility for public
welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants.
They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance
with local, state and federal laws.
Leaving No Trace
Our community respects the
environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities
wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever
possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found
them.
Participation
Our community is committed
to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change,
whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the
medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing.
Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the
world real through actions that open the heart.
Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in
many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We
seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of
our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society,
and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can
substitute for this experience.
The Law
Their Law:
Please remember that even though
we've got our own rules at Gateway, it is still within county, state,
and federal jurisdictions. Local law enforcement may need to enter the
property at some point. We don't expect to see them, but if they do
arrive, please show them hospitality and respect. The event organizers
will cooperate fully with the land owner, their representatives, and
the authorities.
Our Law:
We will have the Gateway Ranger
Team, which has our interests in mind. The Gateway Rangers are your
friends. The Gateway Rangers will carry walkie-talkies and can contact
the event organizers, as well as first aid and fire personnel if you
need it. The Gateway Rangers' primary role is to mediate disagreements
between campers and act as first responders to any situation. Emergency?
Gateway Rangers. First Aid? Gateway Rangers. Looking for missing campmates?
Gateway Rangers. Somebody causing you hell and won't knock it off?
Gateway Rangers.
For any participant who refuses
to comply with our rules, we reserve the right to ask security to remove
them from the property.
Site Law:
Be considerate of the rights, safety, comfort, and anonymity of others.
Parent's are responsible for their children's safety and conduct at all times.
No firearms or fireworks are allowed at the resort.
Illegal drugs are not permitted at the resort.
Alcoholic beverages are permitted. Be responsible.
*Cameras are allowed only in the area of our burn, and only with a person's permission can a photo be taken. (CBR does not allow cameras AT ALL in any of the other areas)
Overnight sleeping in designated areas only.

Gate Hours
THERE WILL BE ABSOLUTELY NO,
NONE, NADA, GATE SALES. PERIOD.
No ticket, No entry, No joke.
You will be turned away at the gate. You cannot gain admittance by volunteering.
Gate hours:
Thurs, 9/25 - You MUST be
PRE-APPROVED
Fri, 9/26 - 9 am - 12 midnight
Sat, 9/27 - 9am - 10pm
Sun, 9/28 - Exodus - You
must depart CBR by 4pm
- At the gate, you'll need your ID. Don't forget this or you'll be considered a minor and must be accompanied by your Mommy. Seriously, anyone under 21 will not be admitted without a parent or legal guardian. You will also need your ticket. Gate will have a ticket number with your name next to it, the two must match.
- Gate will check you for necessary food, water, and equipment to survive a weekend camping in Missouri. If you don't have any, you will be sent back into town to pick some up before you enter the event.
- There will be no in/outs for the duration of the event.
Children & Minors
Anyone under the age of 21
MUST be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. The parent/ guardian
must sign a liability waiver stating their legal responsibility at the
gate and they MUST supervise their child of the time.
Note to parents: There are
many hazards at Gateway such as open flames and other fire effects.
Also, there may be subject matter considered inappropriate for minors,
including nudity and adult language. If you bring your children, but
be prepared to supervise them THE ENTIRE TIME. There is no daycare at
Gateway. Do not expect the community to watch your children or censor
their behavior because there are children/ minors present.
PETS
NO PETS ALLOWED. Sorry.
While we understand the desire to bring your pet everywhere, we are
adopting a NO PETS stance at Gateway. This is for a number of reasons,
first being that pets require as much (or more) supervision than children.
Second, pets create MOOP. There is nothing worse than dancing barefoot
and stepping in a pile of shit. Thirdly, not all pets get along well
with other pets. If you arrive with your pet, you will be asked to take
your pet to a nearby kennel.
Commerce, Vending, & Gifting
There will be NO COMMERCE OR
VENDING. Vending is strictly prohibited at Gateway. This means there
are no concessions, souvenir t-shirts, or coke machines at Gateway.
If you need something, bring it yourself. YOU MAY NOT SELL OR ADVERTISE
ANYTHING ON SITE. We are not a commercial or consumer event.
Please don't advertise your
business, band, DJ, etc. at Gateway. Mass fliers and stickers can make
a lot of MOOP(Matter Out Of Place) and may get you kicked out. Also,
to preserve the spirit of non-commercialism, we ask that you try to
block or alter any large corporate logos or advertisements on your rental
trucks and equipment.
Gateway is devoted to acts
of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not
contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value. If
you have a something that you would like to bring for others, gift it!
GIFTING IS ENCOURAGED!
Radical Self Reliance
You voluntarily assume the
risk of serious injury and/or death by attending Gateway. You are responsible
for your own actions and those of any minors in your charge. There will
be no in/outs for the duration of the event so be sure you come prepared
and have everything you need when you arrive. Gateway is a primitive
camping event.
BRING EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO
SURVIVE COMFORTABLY FOR 3 DAYS IN THE WILDERNESS.

BRING YOUR OWN WATER. 1.5 gallons minimum a day per person is suggested. There will be no potable water.
BRING YOUR OWN FOOD.
BRING YOUR OWN POWER. There
will be no electricity. Bring batteries, solar panels, or if you need
a LOT of electricity, you'd better bring a generator... and fuel to
power it!
If you do choose to bring a
generator, please be considerate of others by following these guidelines:
- Bring the quietest generator you can afford and the smallest that will meet your actual needs. Larger generators are more difficult to transport, use more fuel, and create more pollution.
- Don't run your generator way late at night or early in the morning.
- Place the generator as far from other camps as possible.
- Cover your generator with a sound shield or baffle or outfit it with a motorcycle muffler.
- NEVER bury it to shield the noise.
- Make sure people can't trip over any power cords.
Fireworks, Firearms, and
Safe Burning
Fireworks and guns are prohibited.
Period. If you are planning a fire performance, please contact our Fire
Keepers. There will be designated areas for camp fires. Fire will only
be allowed in these designated areas. Period.
Sound & Sound Systems
If your radical self expression
involves a sound system of some sort, while you are encouraged to express
yourself, we do ask you keep the following in mind:
If you are bringing large scale
sound systems, you must register so that your camp can be appropriately
placed. We are also requesting that large scale sound art decrease their
volume from 4am to 10am.
Media & Shutter Bugs
"Embedded" media will not be tolerated. Public press wishing to cover the event must get prior
approval from Gateway Burners, LLC as well as all necessary releases.
Personal media, pictures, and
recordings of participants or their art without their consent is prohibited.
As a general note: at all times ASK for permission to take pictures,
if you plan on publishing personal photos on the internet, you must
get written permission from the subject of the photo or footage while
they are completely sober.
Remember that ALL images taken
BY ANYBODY at Gateway are the exclusive property of Gateway Burners, LLC
and may not be used in any commercial application without our written
permission.
Leave No Trace
If you read nothing else here,
please read this: The site will be returned to its pre-Gateway Burner
original condition or better- by you.
There will be no garbage cans,
bins, or dumpsters.
Pack it in, pack it out. This
LEAVE NO TRACE (LNT) ethic is a core tenet of Gateway. BRING LOTS OF
GARBAGE BAGS! Shedding excess packaging is a good idea to do BEFORE
you come out. Cigarette butts, pistachio nut shells, plastic baggies,
wrappers, paper plates, you name it... if you pack it in, PACK IT OUT!
This also applies to sequins, feathers, buttons, or any other costume
finery that may fall off (or be rubbed off) and left on the ground as
MOOP.
MOOP (acronym) Matter Out Of
Place: Anything on the ground that nature didn't put there.
Trash Reduction Tips:
- Buy in bulk.
- Don't buy disposable cups, plates, utensils, etc. Instead, encourage people to bring their own.
- Leave excess packaging at home by putting individually packaged items into Zip Lock bags or Tupperware.
- Use reusable/collapsible water cans instead of disposable jugs. Bring crushable aluminum cans instead of heavy/breakable glass.
- Be a LNT representative for your camp and make sure things are kept tidy. Fifteen minutes a day to clean up makes departure day super quick and easy.
